From Fail-Safe to Fail-Secure – Total Protection with Electric Strikes
Electric strikes utilize an electromagnetic locking technology to control the locks on doors in areas you want to secure.
Fail-secure, or fail-locked, electric door strikes can be opened when electrictrified and stay locked when the power is out. Fail-safe, or fail-open, electric door strikes allow for manual opening during a power failure and lock when power is on.
Electric Strike Types
Electric strikes are used to secure entry doors and work with the Card Lock system. They are how electronic security is applied to buildings of all sizes, or to areas within buildings that need extra security or are limited to a certain subset of people. Electric strikes are mechanical locks with electric devices. The latch or lock bolt is held in place until the release is activated, meaning these doors are always locked from the outside. They replace traditional mechanical strikes.
When you are installing a card lock or other electronic access control system, you will need to attach electric/electronic strikes to all of the involved doors, but the type of strike needed depends on the existing door hardware and whether you are upgrading the lock mechanism itself. Our system allows for the use of a variety of different strikes to support all of the doors in your facility. Talk to us about what kind of strikes you might need to support the security and safety of your facility, personnel, and guests.
1505 ELECTRIC STRIKE
1 1/4 x 5 7/8 – – For Offset Latch Entry: Wood, Metal, or Aluminum Frames.
This electric strike is used for offset latch entry, and is compatible with wood, metal, or aluminum frames. This is our standard offset latch entry strike and measures 1 1/4 x 5 7/8 inches.
Like all of our strikes it is designed to be used with the Card Lock entry system, but can also be used with fob readers or keypads. Our strikes come in standard and failsafe (fails open when power is removed) options.
All of our strikes support a variety of door hardware and if you are not sure which to use, feel free to call us for a consultation.
11BS ELECTRIC STRIKE
1 3/8 x 3 1/2 – – For Centerline Latch Entry: Chain Link Units.
This is your option for centerline latch entry and chain link units. (Chain link doors are used when security must be maintained, but airflow is important.) Again, it can function with our Card Lock system or other access control systems, providing secure access and helping protect your facility. Dimensions are 1 3/8 x 3 1/2 inches.
7140 ELECTRIC STRIKE
1 1/4 x 4 7/8 – – For Centerline Cylindrical Latchsets: Metal Jambs.
The 7140 is used for centerline cylindrical latchsets with metal jambs. Cylindrical latchsets are particularly common and this strike allows them to be upgraded to be compatible with an electric lock system. Some people also take the opportunity to upgrade to a stronger lock, but in use cases where that is not necessary, the 7140 has you covered. Dimensions are 1/4 x 4.78 inches.
7114 ELECTRIC STRIKE
1-1/4 x 4-7/8 – – Centerline Adjustable, Modular Design.
For harder to fit doors, the 7114 strike has an adjustable, modular design that allows it to be used with most centerline doors. Talk to us about your specific needs and we can recommend this strike or one of our others. Dimensions are 1 to 1 1/4 x 4.7/8 inches, slightly variable depending on the setup required.
0161 ELECTRIC STRIKE
1 3/4 x 9 – – For use on Doors with Rim Exit Devices, Single or Double.
If your use case includes doors with rim exit devices or rim panic devices (such as are typically used on fire evacuation routes, you will need the 0161 strike. This strike can work on both single and double doors and will not interfere with the use of the life safety device, whilst ensuring that the door remains secure from the outside. Thus, your exit systems will remain up to code as well as secure. Dimensions are 1 3/4 x 9 inches.
8310/8320 MAGNET LOCK
1 5/8d x 2 5/8w x 10 1/2L – – Surface Mounted. To be used on doors when strikes and exit hardware are not practical.
If your existing door hardware does not allow the practical use of strikes or other exit hardware, then a magnet lock is a good alternative. The magnet lock is surface mounted and allows you to integrate these doors into your security system properly. Dimensions are 1 5/8 inches deep, 2 5/8 inches wide and 10 1/12 inches long.

Frequently Asked Questions
Unlike traditional door lock systems, electric strikes are connected to a power supply. Once it’s activated remotely, the latch and door opens.
Electric door strike installation is surprisingly affordable. The average cost for installation is $300 per door, which prices increasing for larger buildings.
After activation, a door will remain open for no more than 30 seconds. This fail-safe is designed to prevent unauthorized access, but the exact time varies depending on the manufacturer of the system.
